Unconditional Love and Mother’s Day

I wrote this post about my constant companion, Bailey, last year. Writing about Mother’s Day for some reason got me thinking about Bailey. Unconditional love is really special!

I had to put down my best friend and constant companion last week. He was my shadow and had been with me for fifteen years. Bailey was best known for his love of balls and chasing anything thrown his way. He loved swimming and it didn’t matter if it was a lake, river or even the ocean. That was when he was at his best!
Bailey had Degenerative Myelopathy. He was losing his ability to use his back legs, though he didn’t seem to notice. He has a happy dog with a strong heart and soul but his body just wasn’t there for him.
Bailey will be missed by his many friends and family. As many of you know; pets have a unique way of getting into your heart. He will always be in mine.
His soul is now free to run and swim once again.

Hi Mark – I remember reading this post the first time and it made me cry then. Thanks for sharing this story with us. I know how hard it is to let our friends go. Ultimately, we are our animals’ stewards, and it’s up to us to love, nurture and protect them. When their quality of life deteriorates or they are in pain, it’s up to us to help them any way we can. Sometimes this is extremely difficult, but ultimately right.
Our pets give us so much joy and ask for nothing in return. This is why they enrich us and make us better. As my Italian cousins wrote about our pets:
la certezza che esista un paradiso anche per loro
It’s certain that there is a paradise for them!
